In the beginning…What existed before God?
Genesis starts out with “In the beginning”, where modern-day fairy tales start out with “Once upon a time”. What does “In the beginning” mean? What existed, what happened? And how!?
As a Christian, creation is an amazing thing to comprehend. Can you imagine the thought of having no family history, no deceased relatives or friends. Adam and Eve were the first of their kind. Can you imagine that there was no yesterday, last year, or last weekend? Adam and Eve were the first of their kind… But what does that mean? Creation is one topic to discuss, but what does it mean to not have had the reference we have today in regards to time or circumstances. I fell asleep last night, but imagine being Adam and Eve with no recollection of their past at all.
I don’t think the bible could have started with “Once Upon a time” because time did not exist. Heaven did not exist because if we continue with Genesis 1:1, we see that God created the heavens and the earth. So what existed? “In the beginning God”… God existed first before anything else. He existed before the heavens and the earth because he created them. He existed before time, before substance. The first thing God created was the heavens and the earth.
And God said
I find it very interested that it did not start with “In the beginning God said”, rather “In the beginning God created”. The reason I find this interested that if God said anything before he created the heavens and the earth, then God would have created sound waves first, which according to Einstein and leading scientists today, contain mass(matter), believe it or not.
So God created the heavens and earth. Essentially he created mass, or matter. He created something out of nothing. Even today we cannot destroy or create matter. Matter can be converted to energy, but to outwardly destroy it, it has proven to be impossible.
Big Bang Theory
Yes, I am a follower of Christ and a believer of the big bang theory, but with some stipulations. Typically, the big bang attributes the creation of the universe to expanding gases and rapid heating and cooling of those gases. As a Christian, I do not believe that gases existed before God made them. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. I believe there was a sudden formulation/creation of matter, much like the big bang theory states, but I believe that sudden creation was a result of God’s doing, or divine intervention. Scientists attribute the creation of the universe to expanding gases, whereas I attribute the creation of the universe to God.
Thank you God for your creation. In your infinite wisdom, you created the heavens and the earth. You created life where none existed. Thank you for the love you demonstrated to us during your creation. You set man apart from the rest of creation and made us in your image. You made us special! I pray that others would be amazed at your glory and power through your creation, so that the glory of your kingdom would advance farther every day.
